Holger Karutz Alexander Olbrich Mukund JoshiIn many of our industry%u2019s plants, products are manufactured using automated processes, often in carousel systems that operate continuously without interruption. Part of these circular systems, especially in block production, are inline control systems that check the various quality characteristics of the freshly manufactured products without delaying production. While this inspection used to be based solely on %u201chard facts,%u201d artificial intelligence is now increasingly coming into play. As a result, not only can quality conditions be recorded and logged, but decisions can also be made automatically as to whether and how products are sorted out in order to bring only high-quality products to market.These control systems work like robots %u2013 in the truest sense. They ensure consistent quality, inline, without delays and without personal sensitivities. And that is a difference that can be crucial: all too often, people make decisions with a blurred vision, blinded by personal sensitivities, or distracted by external influences that are not conducive to the actual tasks at hand. %u201cIs what I am doing good for my company?%u201d %u2013 a simple question that you don%u2019t have to ask a machine. Because a machine does for what it was programmed for. People are different. People are not programmed, they are trained. They make their own decisions, for example based on their experience or, also, depending on their mood. That is the individuality that we have. Which is a good thing. Nevertheless, each of us should be able to continuously question our goals. Everyone should have the confidence to make corrections when necessary. Personal sensitivities and our own comfort zones should not set limits in this regard. Machines also do not know these limits and we should do everything we can to remain superior to machines %u2013 through our individuality to make our own decisions. But this is only possible with open eyes and an open mind: use your own control systems and make the right decisions; inline, without delays, and continuously, over and over again.
