NEWS14 CPI %u2013 Concrete Plant International %u2013 3 | 2025 www.cpi-worldwide.comEducation and capacity buildingAnother key objective of RILEM is to support education and professional development in the construction industry. The organization works closely with academic institutions, professional societies, and research bodies to promote education and training in the field of construction materials and technologies. RILEM also hosts workshops, conferences, and symposia to disseminate knowledge and provide opportunities for professional growth.Improving durability and safetyThe durability and safety of construction materials are central to RILEM's work. The organization focuses on advancing the understanding of material behavior over time, particularly in terms of long-term performance, weathering, and resistance to degradation. RILEM%u2019s work is instrumental in addressing challenges such as concrete cracking, corrosion of steel reinforcement, and other issues related to material longevity.Technical CommitteesAt the heart of RILEM%u2019s operations are its Technical Committees (TCs). These committees are made up of experts in specific areas of construction materials and systems and are tasked with developing guidelines and technical recommendations, and conducting research on various topics related to construction materials. Technical Committees are organized around specific material types, construction systems, or issues that require focused attention. Each committee typically has a specific remit and works on projects such as developing testing methods and associated recommendations, publishing technical reports, and organizing conferences or workshops. With a typical committee lifespan of 5 years, the number of currently active TCs is 48. The following sections, which were summarized from the RILEM website, introduce the work of active committees that work on topics that are relevant for the concrete producing industry. Test method for concrete durability under combinedrole of sulphate and chloride ionsRILEM TC 285-TMS focuses on the deterioration of reinforced concrete structures exposed to aggressive environments, particularly those involving combined sulphate and chloride attacks. While durability design has traditionally considered RILEM has a long history of addressing topics related to the durability and service life of concrete components and structures.
